MONDAY, LABOR DAY

When Leofwyna finally got up today (her day off and I didn't want to disturb her sleep) I went out to finish mowing the front yard. The weather people are saying scattered thunder showers tonight and lots of rain other days this week so I knew I needed to get to it. I also put lost and found items from Cattle Raids in the car so I'll have it with me at moot this week.

This evening Leofwyna is sorting through the rubbermaid tubs to put some of it away. I've been doing load after load of my laundry.

SATURDAY

Today was the demo over in Iowa with the Lonely Tower group. I was just about to head out the door, just went downstairs to find a yarn needle when the phone rang. Could I stop over for a sunshade that was forgotten in the load-up of a friend. Turns out it was a good thing I was running late. When I arrived at site the welcome (for the sunshade) was quite gratifying. Although I stayed sitting quietly in the shade working on my inkle loom, it was a sunny, hot day and I faded and left after only five hours. I'm certainly glad I never took up the fighting end of things as they surely were cooking in their armor.

SUNDAY

I got several phonecalls completed this afternoon relative to Cattle Raids coming up next weekend and made arrangements to meet with Gyda tomorrow to decide which tubs of serving pieces to have brought out for feast. Also talked to Thedrich, Isadora, and left an answering maching request for Callaghan to call me back regarding ice.

Once Leofwyna was awake this afternoon I got busy and did up the dishes (so she could do her pickles this evening) and got the lawn mowed... oh my gosh the crabgrass was getting way ahead of me. I just finished helping Leofwyna peeling and slicing veggies for her pickles and my hands are aching. The Oster sliced things too thin so we were doing them all by hand.

WEDNESDAY

I've got a one track mind going for the time being, pardon my rut!

Got ahold of Owaine again and he is coming with us tomorrow evening along with Aibhilin so I don't need to make two trips and we'll definately need two vehicles. On that note, Leofwyna decided to come too. That's good, both vehicles can have someone who knows for sure where we're going in case we get separated on the road.

Oh good, when Thedrich called and Leofwyna grabbed the tablet to take down his number she found the notes for the information he was calling about so I didn't need to call back when I got in. SCORE!!

At least site survey will be well attended. I hope that's a sign the event will as well.

THURSDAY

I went to the library and Kinko's to make a special Cattle Raids flyer to leave with Rev. Krause to pass out to the congregation this week to further explain our event and invite them.

Met up with crew at Isadora's at 6pm to drive out to Kronberg for our site survey. Altogether we were nine going out to Kronberg in two vehicles. The old pasture I thought would work for archery wasn't deep enough so we did a quick switch putting archery into the softball field, fighting into the former Jacobson lawn and overflow camping (or perhaps smokers' camping to include a smokers' sunshade) into the old pasture.

In the hall we learned there is some air-conditioning in part of it which makes things considerably better. Only the big upstairs hall and two small rooms off it aren't and we can get that all opened up to air out. I'm hoping it's cool enough Friday night to blow them out thoroughly with the fans to make them much fresher. So Suzanne's vigil room has a window ac unit and has it's own access door. The main sunday school room will be cool for royalty meetings. The feast hall, kitchen and downstairs sunday school room are all comfortable for other meetings and, of course, kitchen work and the feast. I'm very happy about all this.

I have competent people handling fighting, archery, troll, A&S, MOY feast, inn and royalty. I'll deal with Gold Key and otherwise generally 'float' Saturday, finishing up with a thorough clearing and cleaning of the hall. It will all be just fine though I'm crossing my fingers that the numbers will be all I would wish for, but not more then I'd wish for. That would be a whole 'nother issue.

One more week to go then I can move on to other things. It just never ends.

TUESDAY

Another problem has arisen out of the addy problem. Apparently the live steel folks were trying to reach me to verify space at Cattle Raids. Opps, I hadn't even thought of them. I wonder how the church counsel will feel about that, and only two weeks to clear it. Quite aside from space for them... ow, ow, ow.

Made a bunch of phonecalls to arrange for the site survey at Kronberg. We're going out at Thursday to familiarize my crew with the layout. I want to check the length of the head table, verify how we're setting up for 60 in the hall, and firm up the locations of sunshades for vigil and other activities. I just wish Pennsic hadn't gotten in the way of going out a little earlier in the month as this last two weeks is becoming rather full. We've got a demo to go to this Saturday on top of everything else.

Tonight for a little change of pace I spent a little time putting together my nine-patch blocks into a single Irish Chain top, then started putting corners on the four patches.

FRIDAY-SATURDAY

Strangely enough these two days seem to have been lost in the mists of time already. With Leofwyna sleeping and at work my brain went to mush and I don't recall any of it. I think I mowed two-thirds of the yard sometime in there; perhaps that's why my brain seems soft as the temps were still abysmal.

SUNDAY

Spent most of the afternoon and evening with Isadora and crew making four roasters of soup for Cattle Raids. A couple of the new kids from Scarlet Keep showed up and one of 'em was an expert Roux maker (I learned something watching him). Sure did make a huge difference in the soup, it smells wonderful. At home tonight I find my right hand and arm are feeling cramped from all the cutting and chopping I did today (a bunch of celery, five onions, 25 carrots and most of a big ham). I didn't get my hands on any of the potatoes though.

MONDAY

Good grief, discovered my addy never got changed on the event flyer. Now we're only two weeks from Cattle Raids and any attempts at contacting me were going to the old address. Today Morganna tracked me down through the MagMor list, pointing out the problem, and I got the flyer updated. I talked to Toli and he tried to connect a short term link between my addys but the system wouldn't let him... which is odd because he runs the system.

I went out awhile this afternoon to get a haircut, pick up some sweet corn, cash in on aluminum cans and get the car washed. Wouldn't you know, it rained this evening.

Good grief! Where has this week disappeared to? The heat index stays in the triple digits, even at night the air is heavy with it. With all the heat I did lots of quiet sitting downstairs, either at the computer or cutting up white cotton scraps to add to my quilting box.

TUESDAY

I got out and drove this afternoon, listening to an audio book as I went, Chieviarri's The Lost Quilter. I wasn't going anywhere, just driving to be doing something I guess.

WEDNESDAY

Of course, I went to moot 'cause there was to be a review of plans for Cattle Raids at the end of the month. Thedrich was there to pass his budget through the finance committee, too. I'm comfortable that things are coming together and our event will be good.

THURSDAY

I read on the internet today that the Persead meteor shower should peak tonight. After midnight we drove north and west of town to get out from under some cloud cover, just like we had to do late last fall for another meteor shower which wasn't nearly as satisfactory as this one turned out. We found a quiet country road and went to a high point to set up our lawn chairs and watched the skies for about half an hour. We both saw approximately a dozen, some we both saw and others only one or the other spotted. As predicted, they were coming every 2-3 minutes I think... we probably missed some... but it was good this time.

SATURDAY

Chiara and I made a quick run to Kinko's to copy flyers to insert into the Runestaff. I also faxed out the portajohn contract.

Spoke with Thedrich and Gwyneth today. Happily some more things are progressing for meals at Cattle Raids. Requested finance committee meeting item next week for feast budget; I started pushing for this to happen months ago!

Although I was late getting out to mow the lawn tonight I still managed to get through it all. It was late dusk when I finished though. Around 11pm there was a loud boom from somewhere behind the house, and then soon another two. I turned out the lights downstairs to go up and peek out windows but couldn't see anything stirring. Does some neighbor still have fireworks from the 4th? Didn't quite really sound like that though.

THURSDAY

Got about three loads of laundry cycled through this afternoon. Thought about mowing but decided it could go another day or two. Spent a good deal of time trying to make phone contacts with minimal luck.
Harvested half a dozen little orange tomatoes to ripen on the counter; I think the green beans are mostly done for.

This evening Leofwyna and I discussed our options for our Niobrara trip and narrowed things down to two 'best' choices. We're both looking forward to this very relaxing 4-5 days camping right here in Nebraska within half a day's drive from home.

FRIDAY

Finally made contact with Carlos, still waiting call-back from Thedrik and Rev. Krause.

MONDAY

Called and got the form so portajons can be finalized for Cattle Raids but wasn't able to reach Rev. Krause... try again tomorrow. Harvested green beans and broccoli from the garden. The tomatoes are being slow to develop but I did get a couple little ones picked and final ripened on the counter. We took the van out to Dodge to deal with the wet problem; hope they can fix it for her.

SATURDAY

I made a few of my Cattle Raid prep calls, got a couple questions clarified and left messages on answering machines for the rest. Thedrik and I are still doing the hone tag thing; that really needs to be resolved soon. I sorted through the scrap bags from Sash, throwing out little pieces and boxing up larger pieces for the garage sale this fall. That still leaves me a substantial pile for trimming out some garb for Goldkey when I get it in gear. I straightened up the living room and brought in the Goldkey Totes from the garage. Terry brought his new girlfriend over to borrow garb from Goldkey and after supper I packed up the Goldkey totes again.

WEDNESDAY

Apparently it rained again this morning; everything is wet again so I'm free of yardwork for the day. I balanced my checkbook and prepared the packet for Premiere, then took Leofwyna to pick up her van before taking myself to the library to find the next Nancy Turner audiobook and then a late lunch.

I went to A&S for the project planning session and also got to visit with Isadora a little about Cattle Raids noon inn. She also asked would I be available for some sewing after Cattle Raids, yay! Killian was there too and we managed to press him a little bit about a sewing Saturday; when Saraphina overheard us she went so far as to suggest a potential date (Aug. 14). We'll see how that goes.

Back at home Leofwyna has it in her head to pull the van in the garage to have the fan on it to dry it out (the AC is draining on the front interior floors). I haven't dealt with the garage since Lilies so there's quite a bit to be moved about and organized. After the first ten minutes or so she chased me out; she's in a grump because of the van situation and doesn't want to inflict it on me. This does not make me happy as I'm feeling guilty about not having done it myself and when she puts things aside I can't find anything but I left her to her grump and went for a brief drive and listened to my audiobook.

THURSDAY

After I went to pick up my prescription I continued west on Superior Street (HWY 34). I had it in my head to go for a drive listening to my talking book and ended up in Kronberg on a whim to see just exactly where the pumpkin patch was and what alternative plans I would have to make because of it. Turned out the patch is much smaller than I envisioned and directly west of the barn. When I stepped off the archery area on north there was plenty of room especially since the brush pile has been scraped up. Now only the potential for mud back there if it's wet might be an issue and we'll have to 'fence' off the pumpkins so they don't get damaged. I'm so glad I hadn't called the council and created a tempest over it. Another look at the 'camping' area shows even more room than I'd remembered. So all is good with the Cattle Raids site.

WEDNESDAY

Delivered the Runestaff and broccoli to Gyda this morning then spent time this afternoon getting the flyer printed out and duplicated to include in it. This evening I went out to Walt Library park for the social moot and started distributing the Runestaffs. I got to visit with Isadora about noon inn for Cattle Raids; no one else is stepping up for it so she'll probably be doing it. Zino and Vasilla are set to handle MOY.

THURSDAY

Sewed up Leofwyna's skirt and hemmed up the sleaves on her new blue top. Ran out to Hancocks to pick up some black elastic to finish the waist of the skirt. We went to supper at the China Buffet when she came home from Shelly's. Back at home I started sewing up s piece of what I think is linen/cotton for a new shift as a swatch burned to soft ash.

TUESDAY

For the cooks out there, I really enjoyed today's blog on 'garbage' at Medieval Cookery. I've gotta try this one for inn sometime... perhaps cattle raids.

I spent a little time this afternoon loading recycling into the car but before I left to run errands Leofwyna was up and reminded me I'd promised to let her use the car. Seems her check didn't reach the insurance company and her policy must be reissued and she doesn't want to drive the van until she's received notification. So I stayed at home and made cinnamon rolls to go with leftover cassarole for my supper.

SUNDAY

Leofwyna has come down with a nasty cold and I'm concentrating on not catching it from her I made Italian beef and pasta using the roasted tomatoes from the freezer. This recipe needs serious work.

MONDAY

I made goolash with the fixings Leofwyna picked up Saturday. Turned out really great; better even than Mom's spagetti but tastes similar.

TUESDAY

Picked up the consignment check at Sassy and deposited it. Stopped in at a couple Goodwills to take advantage of my discount. Found 6 yards of a nice brown print I can use for a quilt back at one and a puzzle and several balls of darning yarn at the other.

WEDNESDAY

Stopped in at Salvation Army for the half-price sale; came out with a grey lightweight wool skirt (for hose) and a raisen-colored wool/silk pasmina shawl.

Took my proposal for Cattle Raids to A&S where extended discussion was held regarding the site, additional distance and all. As no other proposal was evident I'm tentatively optimistic although right now it's still pending.

THURSDAY

Leofwyna made yummy chicken noodles.

SATURDAY

Naturally since I needed the sleep to be ready for the coming day I didn't sleep well... kept waking... slept lightly when I did.

Today was the demo in Mullen.  I borrowed Leofwyna's van for a car pool and picked up Sash, Cat, Zino and Chiara at 8am.  We pulled into Mullen at a quarter of twelve giving us plenty of time for lunch.  We set up on the library lawn with a very good turnout of three fighters and eight (wo)maning the A&S tables.  We had lovely weather for it fortunately and though I had my cloak I didn't need to wear it.

Halftroll rode back with us as arranged.  We came back by way of Kronberg to look over the potential Cattle Raids site but it was full dark and the van's headlights could only show so much.  No problem, Sash and I will go early enough to look it over before dark Monday.

SUNDAY

I just took it easy all day and suggested supper and a movie when Leofwyna finally woke.  We went to see Amelia and found it a nicely told account of her career.

MONDAY

Picked up Sash midafternoon and we were walking the site at Kronberg while there was still light.  The archery field is deep enough, the softball field is huge (we're trying for permission for equestrian), the grove has plenty of room for campers, and another greensward is big enough for a tourney field.  It's all been nicely mown regularly and is pleasant underfoot (no stubble).  We found that there is two water spigots outside which I hadn't known about.  In the hall, the double kitchen is even wider than I remembered and the dining hall has a new table set up that will handle 90 seats.

We made our presentation to the council and asked to know if they were willing by the end of the year so I can prepare a proposal in January if it clears.  Heaven help me, this would make me an autocrat!

TUESDAY

Got up a little early today to be chauffeur for Sash going to his dentist.  Spent the afternoon hitting a few thrift stores then cleaning up the kitchen.  This evening I need to run 3-4 laundry loads.

THURSDAY

Met with Gyda this afternoon and got her signature on the baronial account so she can assume her full duties and I'm only advisor and co-signer. I may be taking on Gold Key but that's still uncertain; we'll see.

At home I raked leaves and when Leofwyna woke up she mowed the backyard and front verge so the entire yard is looking pretty good. The veggie beds could still use work but that depends entirely on what the weather does the rest of this month.

Finally reached Luke at Kronberg about presenting a Cattle Raids proposal at the church council. They'll be expecting us at the meeting Monday, and since it's Monday, not Tuesday, Sash can go too, thank goodness!

FRIDAY

Today we cooked a pork loin roast in the crockpot with dried fruit. I prefer my pork seasoned simply 'cause I like the tast of pork but Leofwyna likes it with fruit and we alternate techniques. Tonight I cleaned up the kitchen but put off doing laundry as her stuff is still in the laundry room.

FRIDAY

As planned I sat troll Friday 6-12... Gyda was there off and on as exchequer in training so I was able to get up now and then for this and that.

When I set up camp Friday I found I didn’t have the hardware to put the bed together so I ended up on the ground again.  Although I felt the cold Friday night it’s probably not because I was on the ground (I had the wood slats and one of the wool blankets under the air mattress)… I could have used one more wool blanket with the one heavy and two light wool blankets I did have.

I think I’m going to use these two light wool blankets (the ones I bought in Canada this summer) as the filler for the pieced linen camp quilts.

SATURDAY

I had made arrangements for troll to be covered so I didn't have to be there until after ten.  I'm not very good with early mornings and this caused me trouble last year so I was determined not to repeat myself this year.  I had good reliable help for troll this morning and was able to 'let it go'.

I wore all Linen for the first time at Hidden Treasures this summer and Cattle Raids this weekend and found it good. It’s time to sort the garb wardrobe and move some things out to make room for new. The goal now is for all Linen and Wool garb eventually… I have some cotton camp garb I’ll probably hang on to and wear out myself but there’s other stuff that can be moved into gold key just as soon as I get myself better organized.

First thing Saturday when I was dressed and had their excellencies together I brought out The Project… the new baronial banner… and presented it to them so it could be used. The bull is hung!

We had a good day in court, too, with Cailee getting a baronial golden feather, a Queen's Chalice, and an AOA.  Dwolm and Randwulf were fyrded, Osric was given a Torse, Eleanor Deyeson was awarded a Silver Hammer and HE Vasilla was given a Cross.  Countess Jane is our new archery champion.

Organizing bardic entertainment for feast turned out to be… interesting? I had lined up HalfTroll myself ahead of time and then during the day had so many offers I became concerned about having too much. I didn’t need to perform myself and late in the afternoon I actually turned down an offer on the basis of too many already.  My thinking was there needed to be time at feast for general discourse, too, and of course there’s always the possibility their majesties might take up time, too. Just before feast while the populous was settling into the hall I held a confab with bardic friends about this and I then decided to narrow the field further. One of the bards was from out of kingdom and thinking I wanted to feature Calontiri I notified this individual that I wouldn't be calling on her.  Let’s just say this did not go over well at all.

During the various courses I presented HalfTroll, _____ and Dorcas. Their majesties did indeed accept a presentation during feast and later requested another individual to perform for them (I think she may have been the same as I’d spoken to that afternoon). All was well with my timing, I think. The out of kingdom personage did make the presentation to their majesties during feast and used the opportunity to add her input to the evening; I choose not to elaborate further on this.  As for the feast, Gwyneth made it and as always it was perfection!

SUNDAY

I was up bright and early packing and loading. I think I actually rolled out of bed by eight which is exceedingly unusual for me.  At least it allowed me to work in the shade for a good 2-3 hours getting the sunshades down and the tent cleared out.  It also allowed the tent to have an hour or so in the sun before I dropped it.  Back at home I crumped and accomplished very little the rest of the day.

MONDAY

When I got home from Milford Sunday I was just too beat to empty the van so I got on it this morning while the driveway was still in the shade… besides I wanted all the camp gear to have a full afternoon in the sun to dry thoroughly before I packed it up for the winter late this afternoon.   Again this evening I'm collapsed in front of the TV and I'm not doing anything further today.

THURSDAY

Today i sewed up the new divider for the tent to replace the drab one that came with the tent. I need to go buy twill tape and netting to finish the project. This is going to be so cool! I finished the day by pulling out the box of silk samples to start stripping them for a couple crazy quilt tops. This, too, will be engrossing.

FRIDAY

Today was a day we put on the calendar to work together on digging out the living room. And surprise, we found a floor under there with carpet and everything. It's not totally done but BIG progress was made. I have about two yards of closet rod of clothes to take to the consignment shops... the fall-winter things I couldn't take before. We priced and boxed up half a dozen boxes of stuff for the next garage sale and piled them in Leofwyna's bedroom. We swapped out the new coffee table and put the old one downstairs... and guest bedding went downstairs, too, along with a big pile of empty paper boxes we're not quite ready to let go yet.

SATURDAY

I had intended to get up and out early for an annual textile garage sale put on by the UNL home ec department but when the alarm went off I decided I had enough fabric and went back to bed. It remains to be seen if I regret this when I hear stories about great buys. Leofwyna and I spent the afternoon working with several others here in MagMor making pretzels for the Cattle Raids feast. There were seven of us and a couple from Lonely Tower so the work went easily.

This evening Isadora called about borrowing a sewing machine while hers is on the fritz so I pulled out my second best 301 and oiled it up for her before she stopped by to pick it up. More silk stripping ensued.

MONDAY

Left the house soon as I got up fully intending to take the wool blankets to the dry cleaners and pick up the serger.  Didn't do that, instead after eating lunch I dropped off aluminum cans out of the trunk and headed back home. After going to the Chinese buffet for supper I mowed the back yard while Leofwyna weeded and deadheaded around the edges.  I also ran the weedwacker through the veggie bed paths and around the house.

When I came into the house we got into a little tiff regarding a TV program; only explanation I can come up with is too much togetherness the last couple weeks.  This sort of behavior hasn't happened in years!  We rebonded over Baskin Robbins ice cream and alls well.

TUESDAY

Left the house after checking email.  Decided not to deal with the wool blankets until Leofwyna found her two to add to the pile.  After eating lunch I stopped in at Goodwill for their traveling sale day (buy one normal price get four more at $1/ea).  Found a pretty little miniature teapot to add to Leofwyna's collection.    Leofwyna spent the afternoon with Shelly and called with supper suggestions and we ended up eating BBQ ribs at IHOP.  I had fun teasing her (and the waitress) about the 'surprise' but not telling her what it was until we got home.  She had to call the waitress to describe it as promised.  I spent part of the evening partially assembling one of the new camp carpets; had to stop when my hands got ache-y.

WEDNESDAY

First thing this morning the mouse died amid power surges and scortch oders (this explains internet connection problems the last few days).  Upon looking it over I found the wire failure where the cord meets the mouse so I shopped for a replacement this afternoon.  Brought home a cordless version so the cord won't be a problem.  Trouble is the mouse needs to be within 3' of the tower attachment.  Hmm, may need to rearrange something.  I stopped in at the Salvation Army 50% clothing sale and found a beautiful black poplin car coat, half of $6.99 is a great price for a very gently used coat.

Natalya had called for a Finance Committee meeting before A&S tonight so of course I went for that.  There was discussion about the Cattle Raids situation and the possibility we may not have the feast hall and kitchen if the site owners succeed in selling their house whereupon they'll be re-constructing the feast hall for a residence! This may happen as late as a couple days before our event; no consideration of contract or fees paid.  Their suggestion is for a feast hall refund, or perhaps we'd like to cancel our event!?!  Unbelieveable!!!

Concensus was to rent (rather inexpensively really) an alternate feast hall with kitchen as insurance in case we need it.  And prices are being sought for security for while over 150 participants are off-site for feast.

I also learned that Gyda was selected for next exchequer while I was gone and we'll be working up the next quarter report together.  She'll also be helping me with troll at Cattle Raids.  I think she'll make a great exchequer.
